A quote that’s attributed to Mark Twain goes like this:
It Ain't What You Don't Know That Gets You Into Trouble. It's What You Know for Sure That Just Ain't So.
Often, it’s our biggest blind spots — things we knew, but were just ain’t so — that get us into trouble. A good proxy for identifying these blind spots is regret. If you have regretted doing something or not doing something, chances are you had a blind spot.
To get rid of these blind spots, it’s best to become a “flâneur.” A flâneur is “a man who saunters around observing society.”
At times, it’s best to step back and observe the most basic, unquestioned things about why we do what we do. Chances are, you’ll be surprised at what you find.
Saunter. Be a flâneur. Test your worldview every now and then. I use Friday afternoons for this. What time do you use?
